In a Nutshell...

The Whole Nine Yards...
Quality
proofreading,
Quality copyediting,
Quality editing—
Proof-It.com offers it all...
What's the difference between
proofreading, copyediting, and editing? Well, there may be big
differences, or there may be virtually no difference; it depends on
the definitions and your understanding of the terms.
You probably don't need to know the
exact meanings of proofreading, copyediting and editing, because the
chances are your document—whatever is it—will need all three.
But, if you're interested in specifics,
simply go to
these pages:
Depending on the professionalism of
the writer, documents usually need several types of corrections and
suggestions. Proofreading, copyediting and editing are often done simultaneously, rather than
one at a time. For
instance, following are just some of the corrections that may be required
on your manuscript:
- Errors: Correct typos, spelling,
punctuation, capitalization, and poor grammar
- Style: Adjust formatting
inconsistencies, debatable grammar, and awkward syntax
- Clarity: Improve sentence
or paragraph clearness, resolve redundancies, modify questionable word
choices
- Consistency: Cure capitalization
non-uniformity, regularity of tone and character, and paragraph
and sentence spacing, indenting, margins, tabs, and fonts
- References: Verify chapter
numbers, table and graph citations, quotes, footnotes, and endnotes
And all this must be done in a way
that doesn't significantly change the writing style—it must
remain your own, or that of your company.

Spell checkers are great—as far as they go. But the human eye and
brain are irreplaceable and essential to document perfection.
Proofreading, copyediting, and
editing are interrelated arts, not sciences. While misspelled words
are often obvious even to the untrained eye (and sometimes to the
computer) grammar, punctuation, and formatting inconsistencies need
a trained professional—preferably
an outsider with "fresh eyes" that has not been involved
in the project previously.
You will have the choice as to what you'd
like us to do—how deeply you'd like us to be involved. Do you want a quick, inexpensive, once-over, an in-depth
total analysis and rewrite, or something in between? We can even do
the work in stages if you prefer. For instance, we could do a quick
once-over with a few extra comments, send it back to you to fix some
things with our guidance on your own "nickel," then take
it back for another go-through. Check our Rates
to see how this might work for you.
Proof-It has the fresh eyes you
need. Given the chance, we can turn your work toward perfection.
